Luckily she’s started her online membership and I’ve been reminded to create my own little retreat at home where I can roll out my mat and tune into one of her classes. To find out more about her membership check out her post ☺️ We thought about how important a calming space is, especially in these strange times, even if it’s just a corner of a room. For me the most important thing for a peaceful mind is a little somewhere I can escape to for 20 minutes to practice some yoga, meditate, draw or just be and have a cuppa. I’ve chosen a couple of prints that I hope you can put up to create your own little space and that will act as a little reminder to treat yourself, maybe pick a couple of wild flowers on your walk to put in an old glass bottle and don’t forget to make a little ritual of making a cup of tea. It’s celebrating the little moments in our day to day that all add up. #eyescloseddrawingthursdays on a Friday morning. I know this one looks a little wild but I’ve been reading a book called ‘mindfulness & the art of drawing’. One of the practices is just to close your eyes and doodle over the page, just making marks for the joy of it and not considering or worrying about the outcome. I put on some really lovely music, set a 10 minute timer, closed my eyes and just enjoyed the flow of the pen over the paper. If you follow the line from beginning to end I feel like you can see the journey of the music. Line drawings always fascinate me because our brains naturally try and understand them and create images, much like when you can see images in the clouds. #lefthanddrawingtuesdays I was reading an interesting article earlier by @neyal99 that grabbed me by its title “why you make terrible life choices”, I don’t think I’d have been drawn to it quite as much if I hadn’t have been in such a bad mood. It turns out we’re motivated either extrinsically by factors outside ourselves like rewards such as money, social status etc *or* intrinsically in which we enjoy the process more than the outcome, and intrinsic motivators yield more long term results. (If you want a clearer explanation then check out his article because I’m rubbish at explaining things!) The best way to be motivated intrinsically is to make the process playful, and that doesn’t necessarily mean fun, its more about making it more engaging and intriguing. You may wonder why I’m talking about this but I’ve noticed recently how easy it is to sit and draw with my left hand or eyes closed or any other of the mad limitations me and @harriet_lowther have come up with, and yet when it comes to actually drawing with my right hand and my eyes open because, well, it’s my job, I’m finding the motivation harder to come by. Turns out limitations on a task are what can make it feel playful and that is why it’s easy to draw this way. I’m not seeking the results but just enjoying the process. Turns out these wild drawing ideas have got something to them. I finally bought another beautiful frame made from reclaimed wood. And now I can share more photos of my prints rather than just crazy drawings in my sketchbook. This one is inspired by the North Wales coast. A few summers ago we camped at Aberdaron and walked along the cliff side above Porth Meudwy where the boat leaves from to take visitors to Barsey Island. I just had to try and capture the salty sea air and sound of the waves.
